The morning sun comes in lower through the kitchen window

And the morning air hasn't weight of the coming day's heat.

The tables and chairs of the weekend's festivities are carted away for another year.

Afternoon brings lightening and torrential rains washing away the calm.

It's time to go back.

The art of Religion leads to shaming.

The love of Religion brings on guilt.

Faith in Love fulfills us.

Faith in Art realises humanity.

Our democratic Pope understands this!

God is of consequence.

Believe him, or not.

The virtual reality that we are constructing around ourselves is rapidly diminishing the need for human social activity. This activity has been a necessity for survival throughout the evolution of the homo genus and has dictated the form of our societies. Now, we are entering a time that has no need of interpersonal relationships.

Already the formation of sedentary groups leading up to metropolitan living began the course of humans anonymously intermingling: an unprecidented natural phenomenon in itself as only life a very limited consciousness exists without acknowledging its surrounding fauna. The stability and security that we have achieved in modern western lifestyles have made this tunnel vision survival tactic not only possible but seemingly advantageous. What we value as a successful life comes through persistent effort of concentrated tasks which lead to the further canalisation of our existence.  A part from various cultural endeavours society has desired to incubate itself into pods of individual consciousness which are increasingly becoming virtually relative.

Despite this social development it is hard to deny the intangible pleasures that can be experienced from interpersonal contact. These moments of pleasure however have come to be the exception rather than the norm, which arguably may render their appreciation even greater. This product of the virtual lifstyle is increased  proof of its irresistible advancement. Even at this point of our social evolution the call to revert to a natural lifestyle is completely conditioned by our virtual existence to the extent that we understand the need to become stewards of the earth in order to maintain nature in its entirety. Otherwise, our desire to maintain a connection with our prehistory is in vain having totally changed its dynamic, risking its very existence. A truly unnatural relationship.

Thus, we cannot but try and come to terms with the nature of virtual reality. Sitting in my courtyard under the fig tree writing these words on my tablet and saving the text intermittently on the web via my Wifi connection, so far I have managed. Yet, I can't help but fear that I am of the few who are able to find this equilibrium. No matter how we choose to live our lives the value of humanity must have precedence. The alternative is an human integration into artificial intelligence. An intelligence without humanity or values: lifeless intelligence.

Returning from two days in Rome to my little spot under the Fig tree I spent most of the morning reading in the german papers once again about the "asylum seekers crisis". I have little doubt that it is amounting to a real crisis, but from my tranquil vantage point it is rather difficult to sense the urgency. Up until this morning I had assumed that my apathy towards the crisis was of twofold reasoning: I don't feel threatened by the influx of immigrants (seeing as I am one of them myself) and a belief that the accent of media attention will instigate the powers that be to address the situation.

This morning, however, was different. Being subject to the hysteria in the italian media devouted to the abovementioned crisis one becomes desensitised by simple common-sense. Once the the german media begins to raise not only the chronicled plight of these people but also the ethical question, how shall we deal with this, I begin to feel a little uneasy. I recognise that the german desire for integration is of a high standard and good will, but at the same time should be reconsidered with a more tolerant attitude. Coming from Canada it's easy to distinguish those who harmonise and those who remain discordant: they create their own sense of insecurity.

These reflections which have no clairity of view, but at the same time I hold of strong conviction, are the fount of my unease. Shutting the door does not solve the problem and N.I.M.B.Y mentality will only raise the tensions. But can we, can I find it in myself to come to terms with results of social iniquity!?  We who wholly profit from Globalisation, will we not pay our dues in full!?

Sitting under the shade of the Fig, whose fruits provided me with breakfast, I begin to wonder: is paradise an egotistical desire? We all desire moments of well being as the rewards of life and I feel that we are all deserving of them in a responsible manner. These are the true tests of faith whose seeds were sown by the french revolutionaries. Are our libertarian ideals of man truly universal and to what extant are we willing to sacrifice for them? We cannot yet expect those of "Unenlightened" cultures to understand the intellectual need behind what we hold dear.

They will however never understand these ideals if we do not practice them and they remain solely prophetic words in cyberspace. Such as these? Sigh!

Beginnng to read Matthew D. Lieberman's new book Social: Why our Brains are Wired to Connect I found myself rather shaken by its opening premise: human brains have been shaped by natural selection to occupy themselves with social considerations in their natural state of rest. What Lieberman calls the default setting of the brain uses exactly the same areas of activity as those of social intelligence. His arguments are rather convincing and for some reason it gave me a sense of fear to think that our mental awareness is centred around social connectivity.

Reflecting upon this fear I realized that my social pessimism (bordering on misanthropy) was the basis of my misgivings. I admittedly have a negative outlook towards the social constructs of today, due to the opinion that we don't manifest enough human consideration. Our society seems to be geared towards material gain and artificial human rights. Trying to rationalise my apprehension made me realise that once again science is giving humanity a chance to correct its course. Understanding that millions of years of Evolution has shaped our minds to navigate the delicate and complicated waters of interrelationships should enthuse us to harmonise society. If we want to maintain that all people are of equal standing we have yet to demonstrate it to ourselves. It is asked of us by Evolution.
